Climate Classification

Köppen classification system was invented by a Swiss botanist Alphonse de Candolle in 1874, in which he named after Wladimir Köppen who classified climates with plants.
Other influential factors on regional climates:
  • Latitude
  • High pressure vs. low pressure zones
  • Heat exchange from ocean currents
  • Altitude
  • Local winds
  • Land and sea distribution
  • Topography of landforms
With these factors, Köppen system brings forth the following classifications:
  • Tropical (A)
  • Dry/Arid (B)
  • Mesothermal (C)
  • Microthermal (D)
  • Polar (E)
  • Highland (F)
